Diverse group of students in a class

Rebel City Collective is a small group of anarchists in London. One part of our work is going into schools, colleges and universities to speak to students about anarchism.

We are slowly building up the number of educational establishments we are speaking at. Most years we get invited back to places we have spoken at, and each year we manage to get into one or two new establishments.

Getting into schools, colleges and universities is a slow process as we have to find a contact in a place and then convince them why it’s really useful to have a real live anarchist speaking to their students. Every time we speak the students love us. Generally, we run well over our allotted time as students either want to ask more and more questions or want to continue the discussions. We realise that the best time for talks are before breaks or the last session of a day – so there is more time to continue talking.

We prepare a talk for part of the session, then a Q&A, and the Q&A is always the most exciting and we get bombarded with a huge variety of questions.

We want to get living, active, anarchists into as many secondary schools, colleges and universities as possible in the London area (and we have also done some talks outside London, either over the internet or if our travel is paid).

We don’t want to talk just to A-Level politics students who are taking the anarchist option in their course. We would also love to speak to degree level politics students, as well as classes taking Cultural Studies or Citizenship courses in schools, FE colleges and universities and anywhere else that’s available.

Can we come and speak to your students?

We know a number of comrades and fellow travellers are teachers or work in educational establishments. Are you a Politics or Citizenship teacher/lecturer? Are you interested in getting involved? Maybe you teach or work in support roles in a school, FE colleges or university and can chat to the relevant teachers about maybe getting us to speak to students? Or contact us with their details?

If you are as passionate as we are about this and have friends or family who are teachers/lecturers – how about getting them to let us in speak to their students?

We would also love to go into infant and junior schools and do a school assembly about what anarchism is and non-hierarchal ways of working and living in an easy-to-understand format for younger kids.

Some of us are teachers and lecturers ourselves and most of us know someone who is a teacher or lecturer. It’s time we countered all the lies about anarchism and started to give the real facts about what anarchists and libertarians really believe.

It’s difficult getting into schools, FE colleges and universities without insider’s support, so we are calling out to all friends and fellow travellers to help us do this. If you can help in any way, contact Jane at a_levelpoliticsanarchism<at>yahoo.com
